Finally, after a long period of one year, the Prime Minister of Pakistan has decided to start the PM Laptop Scheme in 2024. According to the latest details, on the special instructions of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, the process of purchasing laptops has been started by HEC. In fact, the laptop scheme was delayed due to the non-approval of the Prime Minister of Pakistan. But finally, after getting permission to buy laptops, the process of purchasing laptops has been started by HEC. According to a source, about 1.5 to 2 billion rupees will be spent on this scheme.

PM’s National Laptop Scheme – New Updates
Under the Prime Minister Laptop Scheme, the government of Pakistan will provide laptops to students from all over the country on the basis of merit. According to the latest updates, this time a 50% quota has been specially allocated for women by the government of Pakistan. Along with this, a special quota has been allocated for the male and female students of Balochistan, and the number of laptops distributed under this scheme has also been doubled.
Under the PM Laptop Scheme 2024, students who will fail to get a laptop due to not being named on the merit list have been provided with an excellent opportunity to get one. According to the latest updates, students who will not be able to get laptops due to not being named in the merit list will be able to get laptops on easy installments from the designated commercial banks of the government of Pakistan under the second chance. This is a welcome move by the government of Pakistan for the betterment of male and female students.
Eligibility Criteria
Students must meet the following criteria to participate in the PM Laptop Scheme:
Educational institutions:
- The student must be enrolled in a public university or college.
- Students enrolled in private institutions are not eligible.
Education Level:
- Undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students are eligible for this scheme.
- PhD, MA, MSc, and MPhil students can also join this scheme.
Not benefiting from the previous scheme:
- Students who have previously received laptops under any government scheme will not be eligible for this scheme again.
Foreign Students:
- Students from other countries, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir, are not eligible for this scheme.
Degree-Completing Students:
- Students who have already completed their Degree are not eligible for this scheme.
- Documents required for application include the Student Identity Card (CNIC) or B-Form, academic credentials, and confirmation from the educational institution.
Students ineligible for the laptop scheme
Following is the list of ineligible students under the Prime Minister Laptop Scheme:
- Students enrolled in private educational institutions
- Students who have already received a laptop
- Students who have not applied online for the laptop scheme
- Students who do not have an identity card or Bay Form
- Foreign Students
- Degree-Completing Students
- Distance Education Students
- Students who do not have proof of academic ability
These standards ensure that the objective of the scheme, i.e., to ensure access to technology for deserving students, can be achieved.

Procedure to Complete Registration in PM Laptop Scheme
Before explaining the procedure for registration, let me make one thing clear to the students: the registration of laptops has not been started by HEC at present. As I mentioned at the beginning of the article, after the approval of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the process of purchasing laptops from HEC has started. Therefore, as soon as the process of purchasing laptops by HEC is completed, the registration process will be started by HEC.
After the official announcement of the start of the registration process by HEC, aspiring students can go to the web portal established by HEC (hec.gov.pk) and complete their online registration. Remember, there is no other method to complete the registration. Therefore, students who wish to get a laptop have to go to the portal provided by HEC and complete their online registration.
